Talk to focus on prescription coverage

An information session on prescription coverage under Medicare Part D will be presented by Chris Murphy, a counselor at Westbay Community Action, at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane.

Open enrollment for Part D is between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31. During this time, people may switch from their existing Part D plans to other prescription drug plans that are more beneficial to them.

Also, community action counselors will be at the library to assist seniors in choosing a prescription drug plan on Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and noon from Nov. 25 to Dec. 30. No appointment is necessary.

Math, science education to be topic

Critical Issues in Math & Science Education: A Focus on Our Children’s Future, a free workshop sponsored by the Aquidneck Collaborative for Education and Salve Regina University, will be held on Nov. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Middletown High School, Valley Road.

Keynote speaker Martha Rose, chair of the education department at Salve Regina, will present “Preparing Decision Makers — The Importance of Math and Science Education” from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

A discussion will follow, led by Jameson Chace, professor of biology and biomedical sciences at Salve Regina and Patty Houlikan, a former electrical engineer who now teaches at the Highlander Charter School in Providence. Also, a chef and a sailor will talk about how they depend on math and science to do their jobs. The program also includes workshops that will be offered concurrently at 8:15: “Making Response to Math Intervention Work in Our Schools,” presented by Caroline Frey, K-12 mathematics coordinator for Newport public schools and “Understanding the Journey to Math Proficiency: How Can Math Education Help Children Become Problem-Solvers” presented by Judy Droitcour, math professional development specialist for East Bay Educational Collaborative.

Journalist to speak on Afghanistan

Jonathan S. Landay, a national security correspondent from the McClatchy Newspapers’ Washington bureau, will present “The Stakes in Afghanistan: The Debate We Ought to Have” at 8 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Old State House in Bristol. Admission is $5 at the door.

Landay, an award-winning journalist who recently returned from a two-month investigative tour in Afghanistan, will speak on the direction of the war and its effects on the United States and the nations of Central Asia.

The event is sponsored by East Bay Citizens for Peace.

Honor killings to be discussed by author

Jordanian author and journalist Rana Husseini will give two public lectures Nov. 12 at Roger Williams University. She will talk about what she calls honor killings as chronicled in her new novel, Murder in the Name of Honor.

In her book, Husseini tells the stories of women from across the globe who became targets of honor killings and describes the cultural dynamics that allow these acts.

The first lecture, sponsored by the campus Women’s Center, will be given at 10 a.m. in the Mary Teft White Cultural Center and the second at 1 p.m. in the Roger Williams Law School Appellate Courtroom. A book signing will follow each lecture.
