Cat, kitten adoption event planned in Middletown
A cat-adoption event, A Home for the Holidays, will run Dec. 1-12 at The Potter League for Animals, 7 Oliphant Lane, Middletown. All cats and kittens will be available at a special adoption fee of $62, which is half the regular charge.
The felines have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on vaccinations. Those who adopt a cat will get a free carrier, a safety collar and an identification tag. The first 12 adopters during the holiday event will also receive a gift bag.
The Potter League is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and until 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial blood drive set in Charlestown
A blood drive in memory of Lt. Robert Craig will be held at the Charlestown Police Station, 4901 Old Post Rd., from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday. Interested participants can visit www.ribc.org to make an appointment, using sponsor code 2240.
University slates immigration rights workshop
Know Your Rights!, a workshop presented by the Immigration Clinic of the Roger Williams University School of Law, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at CHisPA., 421 Elmwood Ave., Providence. To register, call (401) 467-0111.
Smithfield to collect turkey-frying oil
If you live in Smithfield and plan to fry a turkey over the holidays, hang on to the gallons of cooking oil. The town will collect the used oil on Jan. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Works Garage, 3 Spragueville Rd. Newport Biodiesel will recycle the oil into a fuel that can be used by both diesel vehicles and by oil-based home-heating systems.

Christmas ornaments honoring veterans sought
Family and friends of military veterans are invited to create ornaments commemorating their military service for the Heroes’ Tree at the State House this holiday season.
Ornaments may be taken to the State House and left with the Capitol Police between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The tree will stand in the State Room throughout the holiday season.
Providence schools offer workshops for parents
Parents with children enrolled in the Providence School District are invited to a conference, Working Together Towards Student Success, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 5 at The Juanita Sanchez Complex (PAIS & Cooley High School), 182 Thurbers Ave.
Workshop topics will include college readiness and graduation requirements; math and science curriculum; communicating with your child’s teacher; healthy eating on a budget; bullying; fire prevention during winter months and getting answers to questions about your child’s education.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be available. Also, there will be translation services in the Hmong, Khmer, Lao and Spanish languages. Supervision for children ages 5 to 12 will be provided.
