A free parent workshop will be held May 7 at the Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, to provide advice on how to maintain therapeutic gains in the face of shrinking therapy time. The session, beginning at 7 p.m., will be led by Jennifer Twachtman-Reilly, speech-language pathologist from the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The presentation will include easy-to-implement modifications to standard speech-language therapy for children with autism spectrum disorders. Participants should register by calling (401) 886-6612.

Volunteers are being sought to assist Medicare recipients in Kent County in navigating the health-care maze. The volunteers would be part of the Westbay State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Volunteers help beneficiaries understand such programs as Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare supplemental insurance policies. Training is provided.

Published every other year, the 20-page, pocket-sized booklet provides office addresses, e-mails and telephone numbers for state officials, major state agencies, departments and committees.

Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy is seeking candidates for several summer internship positions in his district office, 249 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket. Interns handle policy research, constituent affairs, media relations and other activities.

Congressman Kennedy’s internship program, linked to the State Government Internship Program, requires interns to work 8 to 10 hours a week. Candidates must be in their second year at a two-year college or their junior or senior year at a four-year college and have at least a 2.5 grade point average.Applications must be submitted to the Rhode Island program office. Everyday people interested in finding out more about the practice of law and the court system are invited to attend the Citizens’ Law School sponsored by the Rhode Island Association for Justice, formerly the Rhode Island Trial Lawyers Association. This program, now in its 16th year, is designed to familiarize the general public with the justice system and to explore topics that affect everyday life, from foreclosures to workers’ compensation cases.

Lecturers will include Superior Court Judge Francis J. Darigan Jr. on criminal law and David A. Logan, dean at Roger Williams University Law School, on constitutional law.

A free community education program titled “ ‘Tween’ Sex? Parents CAN Protect Their Children” will be offered May 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at The Westerly Hospital’s Henry J. Nardone Conference Center, 25 Wells St. Designed for parents of children entering grades 5 through 8, the program will be presented by Dr. Michelle Cretella, local pediatrician and member of The Westerly Hospital’s medical staff.

Cretella will review the physical, social and emotional consequences of “sexting,” “cyber-sex” and other sexual activities that “tweens” erroneously perceive as safe. In his presentation, “The Burning of HMS Gaspee: Rhode Island’s First Shot in the American Revolution,” librarian Jonathan Ryder will provide details of the people involved in the burning, a timeline of events and a brief analysis of its aftermath, May 4, at 7 p.m. in the Champlin Program Room of the Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., East Providence.

A resident of East Providence, Ryder is a librarian at Classical High School, Providence, and is active in the Pawtuxet Rangers (Rhode Island Militia) and the 2nd R.I. Regiment (Brigade of the American Revolution).
