Armed man takes prescription drugs from pharmacy
12:14 AM EDT on Monday, June 18, 2007
NORTH PROVIDENCE — A man carrying a pistol jumped the counter at a Brooks Pharmacy on Mineral Spring Avenue Saturday morning, forced the pharmacist to open a locked cabinet containing controlled drugs and escaped with several bottles of the painkiller OxyContin, the police said.
Detective Sgt. David Drezek said the robber is apparently the same man who attempted to rob the Park Avenue branch of Citizens Bank in Cranston the day before.
“It’s the same guy wearing the same clothes,” Drezek said. The police described the man as wearing “a Texas Longhorn baseball cap,” a dark windbreaker and beige cargo shorts.
Drezek said that the Brooks robbery happened at about 9:30 a.m. and that there were about 10 employees and customers in the store at the time.
Drezek said no one was injured but that he is concerned the robber was changing his behavior in an alarming way.
“He’s escalating, to brandishing weapons,” Drezek said. The intruder at the Cranston bank did did not show a weapon.
“He’s committed two major felonies in two days. We’re concerned about the safety of the public.”
