Glocester accident investigated
01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, November 6, 2007
GLOCESTER — A 26-year-old woman who was found critically injured along the side of Route 44 — Putnam Pike — on Thursday was still recovering in the hospital as of yesterday, according to the police.
Kathleen Munroe, of 52 Old Snake Hill Rd., is the apparent hit-and-run victim, and Police Chief Jaime A. Hainsworth said that the police are still investigating the incident but have no suspects.
The police say Munroe was last seen leaving Cady’s Tavern, at 2168 Putnam Pike, and heading west on the road at about 1 a.m. Hainsworth said that Munroe had come to the bar with friends and it was still unclear to the police why she had walked out alone.
A police patrol found Munroe at about 1:10 a.m. lying in the westbound breakdown lane near the entrance to the George Washington Management Area, a state-owned forest and campground at 2185 Putnam Pike.
Munroe was wearing blue jeans, a denim jacket and brown work boots. The police said there were no vehicles in the immediate area, and there were no calls from the public reporting the accident.
Munroe was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with severe head trauma and injuries to her lower extremities, according to the police. She spent much of the morning Thursday in surgery and was unable to speak to the police until Nov. 2 when doctors removed her from critical status, according to Capt. Joseph Mattera. She told the police that she could not recall what happened and only remembered waking up in the hospital.
The police are asking anyone with information on the accident or the victim’s whereabouts prior to the accident to contact Sgt. Charles Entwistle, the lead investigator, at (401) 568-2533.
