01:00 AM EDT on Monday, October 26, 2009
PROVIDENCE — A Central Falls man who got out of his car after an accident on Route 95 early Sunday was struck by a passing car and became stuck in its windshield as that driver continued on the highway, the state police said.
Jose Flores, 24, of 225 Hunt St., Central Falls, who was one of three injured in the accident, was in trauma intensive care at Rhode Island Hospital on Sunday evening, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The driver of the car that the police say struck him, Christopher Swiridowsky, 30, of 28 Lynch St., Providence, was charged with three counts of leaving the scene of an accident after personal injury and one count of obstruction of a police officer. Swiridowsky also was wanted on two warrants, one for failing to appear in a Superior Court drug case, and one charging him with embezzlement, according to the state police. Swiridowsky was held pending court a court appearance Monday.
The state police said cars driven by Flores and Michael Abrames, 33, of 86 Beverly Rd., East Providence, collided just after 1:30 a.m. near the Branch Avenue overpass on Route 95 south. Abrames’ vehicle stopped facing the concrete barrier next to the high-speed lane. Flores’ car was just in front of Abrames’. Abrames, Flores and a passenger in Flores’ cars got out, when, according to the state police, Swiridowsky struck the rear corner of Abrames’ vehicle, pushing it into Abrames. Swiridowsky’s car continued on, striking Flores and his passenger and causing Flores to become lodged in the windshield, the police said.
Swiridowsky then drove off, followed for a mile and a half by another motorist, who contacted the state police by cell phone, the state police said. Swiridowsky parked his car in the National Office Products parking lot on Mechanic Street and fled, the police said. He was found hiding in a closet in his house and arrested, the state police said.
Abrames was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and released. The passenger in Flores’ car, who has not been identified pending family notification, was in critical condition, according to a state police statement Sunday afternoon.
