Metcalf Diversity in Media Award winners named

Providence Journal copy editor Stephanie McKenna has received a Metcalf Diversity in Media Award for a community news column that a news release announcing the awards called a “must read in the minority community.”

McKenna, who won in the daily print category, was among seven journalists and news organizations honored by Rhode Island for Community & Justice for work that included coverage of the changing of the state’s economic landscape, religious tolerance, challenges of seeking citizenship and neighborhood pride. Awards will be presented May 15 at the Marriot Hotel in Providence.

Other recipients were:

Jonny Skye Njie and the state Department of Education for “Deny No Dream” in broadcast category; Nancy Kirsch and the Jewish Voice and Herald for “Faith: Divider or Uniter?” in the weekly/bi-weekly print category; Gail Bracidiferro and Rhode Island Monthly for “Pride Street” in monthly print; Matt Jerzyk and the Rhode Island Future’s Blog for “Papitto Whistleblower’s Punished,” which won the Technology for the New Millennium Award; and Providence Business News for its “Women in Business” series, which won for special series.

Established in 1988 to honor the late Michael Metcalf, publisher of The Providence Journal, the honor is one of the premier awards given in the state recognizing professional journalists, media outlets and Internet media for promoting diversity awareness and social justice. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the award.

Rhode Island for Community & Justice is a social justice organization whose mission is to fight bias, prejudice and racism and to promote understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures by bringing all people together around the values and needs that unify us.
