Events today and tomorrow

Barrington:

Mon. Ceremony, Victory Gate, Barrington High School, Lincoln Avenue, 8:30 am. Parade assembles at 9 am and steps off at 9:30 am from Barrington High School, up Lincoln Avenue, to Upland Way, south to Barrington Avenue and to Maple Avenue; turns left and continues east along Maple Avenue to County Road, ends at the Town Hall front lawn. Rain site: Barrington High School Auditorium.

Bristol:

Sun. Mass with veterans of the Rhode Island Veterans Home Chapel, O.J. Bisbano Building (North), 9:34 am.

Mon. Ceremonies. Buses leave Burnside Memorial Building at 9:15 and 9:30 am to transport members of the public to North Burial Ground for ceremonies at 9:45 am. After the wreath-laying ceremony, parade forms on Hope Street and proceeds south to the VFW Home to lay a wreath. Parade proceeds south to Hope and Washington Street, where plaque and wreath will be laid in memory of Bernard “Butch” Almeida, who had been listed as MIA. His status was recently changed to KIA. Parade regroups and proceeds to the Bristol War Veterans Memorial Garden, where wreaths will be laid honoring all deceased veterans of all wars. A collation will be provided for the general public at the Bristol Train of Artillery Home, State Street. Rain site: BTA Hall.

Burrillville:

Sun. Burrillville High School, East Avenue, 1 pm. Featuring guest speaker Col. John Ducharme, USAF. Program to include recollections from World War II and Korean War veterans, as well as a band concert by the Burrillville High School Band and Chorus.

Mon. Berard-Desjarlais Monument, Victory Highway and Route 7, 9:30 am. Freedom Park, East Avenue, 11 am.

Charlestown:

Sun. Parade forms at noon, begins at 1 pm from the intersection of Route 1A and Ridgewood Road and travels down Old Post Road to Fort Neck Road, where participants board buses to Ninigret Park for an ending ceremony there.

Exeter:

Mon. Ceremony, Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Route 2, Exeter, 1 pm, at the World War II monument.

Fall River:

Mon. Ceremony aboard the USS Massachusetts at noon includes the reading of names of area residents who perished in Vietnam. Parade assembles at Kennedy Park, South Main Street, at 1 pm and steps off at 2 pm. Wreath-laying at park’s veterans monuments before parade. Parade travels down South and North Main streets to Bank Street before proceeding into the Municipal Veterans Memorial, 72 Bank St., for closing ceremonies. Coffee, refreshments after the ceremony.

Hopkinton. Sun. Parade steps off from the Hope Valley Fire Department, 996 Main St., Wyoming. 2 pm.

Jamestown:

Mon. Parade forms at the Jamestown School, Lawn Avenue at 9:30 am and proceeds at 10 am down Watson Avenue to North Main Road and Narragansett Avenue for a ceremony at the cemetery. It will conclude with a program and another ceremony at Memorial Square, at East Ferry. Open House, Jamestown Emergency Medical Services, 11 Knowles Court, Jamestown, 11 am-1 pm.

Johnston:

Sun. Memorial Service, Johnston War Park bandstand, 9:30 am. Program includes a reading of names along with bell ringing and songs by Vini Ames. Memorial Service, War Monument in the Village of Graniteville, Putnam Avenue and Mathewson Street, 11 am. Refreshments served after service. Rain location: fire station next door to Monument.

Lincoln:

Mon. Parade steps off at 10 am and travels along Smithfield Avenue (Route 126). (401) 333-1100; www.lincolnri.org.

Little Compton:

Sun. Flag Retirement Ceremony, in front of Legion Hall, the Commons, 2 pm. Old worn out or torn flags can be brought for proper disposal. Memorial Service, will be held at 7 pm. at Acoaxet Chapel, Howland Road in Westport, Mass., 7 pm. American Legion Post 37, Auxiliary members and guests are welcome.

Mon. Parade forms at Veteran’s Field at 9:30 am and steps off at 10 am, marching twice around the Commons, and ending on Pike’s Peak, at the west tip of the Commons, for memorial service. Rain site: Katherine B. McMahon Middle School Gymnasium.

Newport:

Mon. Ceremonies, Storer Park, by the Causeway to Goat Island, 11 am, and on the lawn of Newport City Hall, Broadway, noon. Containers available at the ceremony for the deposit of worn/faded/unserviceable U.S. flags. World War I Monument in Miantonomi Park open 12:30 to 2:30 pm, weather permitting. Adults and families are welcome to climb the 100-foot stone tower. Appropriate shoes for climbing are required and binoculars recommended. Pets and young children are not advised to climb the tower. There is also a lower observation deck about 50 feet up. An adult must accompany all children since the upper section of the 100-foot tower is an open and steep spiral staircase. Wreath-laying ceremony at the Marine monument in Perrotti Park, America’s Cup Avenue, 10 am.

North Kingstown:

Mon. Wreath-laying ceremonies at the North Kingstown Town Hall and at Veterans Memorial Park 9 am. Parade forms at Wilson Park and steps off at 10 am to West Main Street (Route 1A south) to Brown Street, onto Phillips Street and then onto tower Hill Road (Route 1 south) for concluding ceremonies at the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial on the grounds of Elm Grove Cemetery, 11 am. Parade marchers stop at Updike Park, Wickford Village, for wreath-laying ceremonies by the World War Memorial and by Wickford Harbor. Hot dog roast after at First Baptist Church of North Kingstown, 135 Tower Hill Rd. In event of rain, ceremony only at 11 am.

North Providence:

Sun. Italian American Historical Society, Sons of Italy — Loggia Vittoria, Knights of Columbus Hall, 1675 Douglas Ave. Presentation by Spencer DiScala, a history professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston on the Monongah Mining Disaster of West Virginia. 2 pm. Free refreshments.

Mon. Parade steps off at 1 pm from the North Providence High School parking lot, 1828 Mineral Spring Ave., travels to Douglas Avenue and to Notte Park, 1160 Douglas Ave. Wreath-laying ceremony at the park’s war memorial at 2:15 pm. Continuous shuttle to and from the park from the high school and the former Rizzo Ford dealership at Mineral Spring and Douglas avenues.

Pawtucket:

Mon. Ceremonies. Shell at Slater Park, 9 am; Hiker Monument at Grove and Underwood streets, 9:15 am; Unknown Military Dead inside cemetery, Mineral Spring Avenue; 9:30 am; Veterans’ Memorial Park, Roosevelt Avenue and Exchange Street, 11 am. Rain site: inside Gatchell Post, 11 am.

Portsmouth:

Mon. Service, VFW Post, 822 Anthony Rd, 10 am. Refreshments after.

Rehoboth:

Mon. Parade steps off at 10:15 am from Rehoboth Congregational Church, 139 Bay State Rd., and proceeds to Route 44 and Danforth Street, turning east to Palmer River School, 326 Winthrop St., where a memorial service will be conducted.

Richmond:

Mon. Parade forms at 9 am and steps off from the Carolina Fire Station, Route 112, at 10 am; ends at Grand Pre Park, across from St. Mary’s Church.

Scituate:

Mon. Parade forms at 10 am at Berkander Field and Institute Lane and steps off at 10:30 am from the corner of Institute Lane and Danielson Pike; proceeds West on Danielson Pike to Silk Lane to Greenville Road, and ends at the steps of the Old Historical Congregational Church, Route 116, for ceremonies to honor veterans. Rain site: Ceremonies in North Scituate Community House, adjacent to the Congregational Church.

Smithfield:

Mon. Memorial Service, Veterans’ Memorial, Deerfield Park, Indian Run Road. Wreath-laying at the World War I monument and at the veterans’ memorial. Parade of colors kicks off the program at 10:30 am.

South Kingstown:

Mon. Parade steps off from the corner of School Street and Kingstown Road, 10 am, and travels to Dale Carlia Corner’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial for a brief ceremony, then down Main Street to Saugatucket Park for concluding ceremonies at about 11am. In event of rain, parade canceled, with ceremonies at 10 am at South Kingstown High School, 215 Columbia St.

Swansea:

Mon. Mass, St. Francis of Assisi Church, 530 Gardners Neck Rd., 9 am. Ceremony at Town Hall, 81 Main St.,10 am, includes a traditional wreath placing, color guard and presentations. Rain site: American Legion Post 303, Ocean Grove Avenue. Parade will form between noon and 12:15 pm in the parking lot at St. Francis of Assisi Church, stepping off at 1 pm. Veterans of all wars are invited to march.

Somerset:

Sun. Veterans Services, Congregational Church, County Street (Route 138) across from the World War II Memorial, 10 am. Dedication and wreath-laying ceremony, World War II Memorial, Somerset Library, 1464 County St., 11 am. Refreshments at the Old Town Hall (next door to the library) afterwards.

Mon. Parade steps off at Somerset High School, Luther Avenue, 10 am, and proceeds to the World War I Monument, Riverside Avenue for a wreath laying. Parade returns and ends at the VFW Post, Washington Avenue at County Street (Route 138), for final ceremony and refreshments will be served after the parade.

Warren:

Sun. Ceremony, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Market Street, 9 am, includes the placing of a wreath and the firing of a cannon by the United Train of Artillery.

Mon. Exercises, Warren Town Wharf, Water Street, where participants conduct the tossing of flowers in the river in memory of service personnel lost at sea, 7:45 am. Wreath-laying ceremony, town’s War Memorial, Town Common, State and Church streets, 8:15 am. Parade forms at the Common, 8:30 am, and heads west on State Street to Water Street, turning north onto Water Street to the corner of Main Street, for a stop at North Burial Ground for a salute firing and the playing of Taps. Parade continues south to Sowamsett Avenue, turns east to South Burial Ground for exercises. Those watching the parade encouraged to step in behind the parade as it departs North Burial Ground and march along to the South Burial Ground. For those who are unable to follow the parade, a shuttle bus will run to and from the Commons and South Burial Ground. Refreshments after parade and services at the Central Fire Station, Joyce Street, 11 am.

Warwick:

Sun. Jewish War Veterans Service, Memorial Wall of Honor, Lincoln Park Cemetery, 1469 Post Rd., 11 am.

Mon. Parade, steps off from Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick Avenue, at 9:15 am and travels to Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, West Shore Road, for a ceremony.

West Greenwich:

Mon. Parade steps off at the Coventry/West Greenwich town line, Route 102 at 1:30 pm and proceeds south to the West Greenwich Town Hall, for a ceremony.

Westerly:

Mon. Parade forms behind the Pawcatuck Shopping Center at 8:30 pm, steps off at 9:30 onto Route 234 to West Broad Street. After a short ceremony at the World War I monument, West Broad Street and Pequot Trail, parade continues to the Pawcatuck River Bridge for a wreath laying, and proceeds to High Street and into Wilcox Park, where it will conclude with the main ceremonies. Collection of items to be sent to service people in Iraq conducted SERVE! Inc., at the VFW Post, Route 1, Pawcatuck, Conn., immediately following parade. Hand wipes, soap, playing cards, shampoo, hand cream (small travel size only), disposable razors, reading materials, beef jerky, ramen noodles.

West Warwick:

Mon. Observance, Veterans Memorial Park, 2 Legion Way. 9:30 am.
