PROVIDENCE — The police said yesterday that they have arrested a 17-year-old Woonsocket youth in connection with Friday’s shooting of another young man in a downtown pedestrian tunnel.
And the man who allegedly fired the shots from a .25 caliber handgun, Johabanny Rosado, 19, of 143 Oxford St., was arraigned in District Court yesterday and then returned to the Adult Correctional Institutions in lieu of bail.
The victim, Justin L. Lawrence, 18, of 244 Rhodes St., was grazed in the back by a bullet and was hospitalized for a matter of hours before being sent home.
Deputy Police Chief Paul J. Kennedy said Rosado and Lawrence had been feuding over “perceived slights” and happened to encounter one another downtown.
The incident was a “caught-on-tape” crime, according to Kennedy, because video taken from surveillance cameras shows the shooting and was instrumental in the police confirming the identifications of the two suspects about three hours later.
One of the cameras is in the tunnel beneath the former Union Station, which links the municipal skating rink at Kennedy Plaza with a plaza where Capital Grille restaurant and Citron Wine Bar & Bistrol are located.
Patrolmen Robert Carlin and Joe Black, who recognized both suspects from the video, arrested the youth on the South Side of Providence, where he is said to hang out, on Sunday. The video, according to the police, shows the youth standing with Rosado when the shooting occurred.
The youth was referred to Family Court on two charges, conspiracy to commit an assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of cocaine. A judge ordered him held at the Rhode Island Training School pending a hearing March 17, according to Kennedy.
At about 10:45 p.m. Friday, Rosado was arrested at 645 Douglas Ave., where he allegedly had spit into the face of a woman whom he also threatened, the police said. Rosado identified himself to the police with a false name, but his real identity was determined when he was brought back to police headquarters, Kennedy said.
Rosado was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony; and simple assault on the woman; disorderly conduct; and obstructing police, for allegedly giving the police a false name. The latter three counts are misdemeanors.
No plea was entered on the felony because District Court does not handle felonies, and Rosado pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanors. Judge Walter Gorman set cash bail at $50,000 on the felony and $2,000 cash bail on the misdemeanors.
