State of the City address tonight at Convention Center
01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, February 12, 2008
PROVIDENCE — Mayor David N. Cicilline will deliver his fifth State of the City address tonight at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
The mayor will speak at 7 in the center’s fifth-floor rotunda. The address is open to the public.
Cicilline in the past has used the address to outline broad policy goals and, occasionally, specific initiatives. An advisory released by Cicilline spokeswoman Karen Southern said that this year’s address will focus on the economic issues the city faces, in the context of state and national fiscal problems.
“The mayor will celebrate the city’s accomplishments over the past year. He will also outline his strategy for protecting Providence’s momentum in the wake of a state budget crisis and a downturn in the nation’s economy that will harm working families in Rhode Island’s cities and towns,” the advisory states.
In Cicilline’s first state of the city address, in 2004, he boasted of $1 billion in economic activity in the city. His second address focused on the sense of integrity that he said his administration had instilled in city government. His 2006 speech envisioned a new mass transit system for the city, and argued that Providence has achieved a certain greatness.
Last year’s speech, which doubled as his second inaugural address, focused on the city’s troubled school system, and Cicilline’s hope that it could be reorganized for better results. Cicilline also spoke of making Providence a “green” city, fighting poverty and fixing the underfunded pension system.
