Boat may have hit man before he fell into ocean

NARRAGANSETT — An 85-year-old man who died after falling into the water near the Block Island Ferry may have been injured in a collision with a boat, a spokeswoman for the state medical examiner’s office said yesterday.

Robert Forloney, a South Kingstown resident who was often seen at the docks in Galilee, was reported missing on the morning of Nov. 15.

His body was recovered a few hours later, near the ferry docks.

The medical examiner’s office reported yesterday that the cause of death was “multiple traumatic injuries,” which suggest that Forloney may have been hit by the ferry or another boat, said spokeswoman Andrea Bagnall Degos.

A ferry worker called the Coast Guard on the morning of Nov. 15 after noticing a walker at the end of the ferry’s pier and Forloney’s green Ford Taurus, which had been parked at the dock overnight.

Ferry workers and those familiar with the docks described Forloney as a friendly, quiet man who was often seen watching harbor traffic from his car.

“He just loved the water,” said Bob Carpenter, of Narragansett. “He liked to watch the boats come and go.”
