Man hit by car in Portsmouth parking lot

PORTSMOUTH — George Thurston, 73, suffered head injuries when he was struck by a car in the parking lot of Clements Marketplace off East Main Road at Turnpike Avenue Thursday morning.

Police Chief Lance Hebert said rescue workers indicated they did not believe Thurston was gravely injured. Thurston was taken to Newport Hospital and transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, Hebert said.

Thurston was leaving the supermarket shortly after 11 a.m., walking in a crosswalk outside the main entrance, when he was struck by a southbound car driven by Patricia A. Soares, 48, of 50 Jefferson St., Tiverton, according to the chief.

He said the police had not yet completed interviewing witnesses.

Girl reports abduction attempt

SCITUATE — The Scituate police said yesterday that they are investigating a report by a schoolgirl that someone tried to abduct her on Thursday.

Details were sparse. “There’s not a whole lot to fill in,” said Sgt. Craig W. Hawkins. “She’s fine. Nobody has been harmed. There was an incident and it’s under investigation.”

He said the alleged kidnap attempt happened near William Henry Road. The girl is a student at Scituate Middle School.

David Light, the school principal, sent a letter home to the parents of students describing what happened.
