State landfill announces free tours of facility
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, July 14, 2008
Do you ever wonder where your trash goes? Or those recycled bottles and cans?
Now anyone can see what happens in a tour of the state Central Landfill, in Johnston, an eye opener that Rhode Island Monthly magazine has called “the best field trip in Rhode Island” for schoolchildren.
Rhode Island Resource and Recovery Corporation, the independent state agency that operates the landfill, is offering a free 90-minute tour and educational session July 26 and Aug. 16 on a first-come, first-served basis.
On each of the tour days, participants will board a bus that will take them around the perimeter of the landfill, with stops at the methane power plant, the Eco-Depot shed, the composting site and the Materials Recycling Facility.
“We find that when people see the size of the landfill, they have a better appreciation why they need to create less waste and recycle more,” said Mike O’Connell, Resource Recovery’s executive director.
Reservations for the tour can be made by calling Pat Russo at Resource Recovery, at (401) 942-1430, ext. 121. The maximum capacity is 25 people per session.
