Driver who hit and impaled man on Route 95 confronted his pursuer, then fled
01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 27, 2009
PROVIDENCE — The motorist who struck three people on the side of Route 95 early Sunday morning and drove off with one of them lodged in his windshield realized he was being followed by another car, the state police say, and approached that driver after they both stopped off Mechanic Street, about a mile and a half from the initial accident.
“Why are you chasing me?” the man asked of Albert Garcia before running off into the night, leaving the bleeding pedestrian still stuck in the windshield.
It was at that point, Garcia, of Providence, told the state police, that he noticed the injured man “in a seated position partially inside of the passenger’s side of the windshield.”
That man, Jose Flores, 24, of Central Falls, was conscious at the time but not responding to Garcia’s questions about his condition, Garcia told the state police troopers who arrived on the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Flores was listed in serious condition Monday at Rhode Island Hospital with broken legs and an arm while the man now charged with striking him and two other people was ordered held without bail.
Christopher Swiridowsky, 30, of 28 Lynch St., faces three counts of leaving the scene of an accident after injury and one count of obstructing a police officer. He was ordered held Tuesday afternoon in Superior Court as an alleged bail violator stemming from a July drug charge he was facing.
The state police report of the incident also says Swiridowsky was wanted at the time by Warwick police on a charge of embezzlement over $100 and that he had failed to appear for a court hearing.
Cars driven by Flores and Michael Abrames, 33, of East Providence, collided near the Branch Avenue overpass on Route 95 south about 1:30 a.m. Both men got out of their cars to inspect the damage, along with a passenger in Flores’ car, Efron Trinidad, 28, of 578 Hunt St., Central Falls.
The police say Swiridowsky then slammed into them while driving a black Honda Civic registered to his girlfriend.
The impact broke both of Trinidad’s legs, his back and nose and caused brain injuries, the state police report says. Trinidad remained unconscious at Rhode Island Hospital Monday morning, the state police said. Abrames was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and released.
Troopers investigating the accident determined that Swiridowsky had turned off onto Branch Avenue after striking the three men, then turned onto Livingston Street and Mechanics Avenue before stopping in the National Office Products parking lot. After speaking to his girlfriend who owned the Honda, the police say they found Swiridowsky hiding in a closet in his home.
