Both Sen. Jack Reed and Rep. Patrick Kennedy received campaign contributions from Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu — and both now have given the equivalent amounts to charity.

Reed decided last week to donate $2,500 to charity, after it was reported that Hsu had pleaded no contest in 1991 to grand theft in a $1-million fraud case and had not shown up for his 1992 sentencing. The money represented donations that Hsu made to Reed’s campaign in February.

Several other Democrats — including presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York — also had said they would divest themselves of money received from Hsu.

Kennedy, whose office initially said he would keep the $6,200 from Hsu, announced yesterday that he would give the money to charity.

Kennedy had originally counted $6,600 in donations, but a review of federal campaign records showed it was actually $6,200.

Both Kennedy and Reed were named in different reports by national newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal, as having received contributions from Hsu.

Hsu’s donations to Kennedy’s campaign listed Hsu as director of Next Components Ltd. once and director of Components Ltd. the other times. The donations to Reed’s campaign listed Hsu as director of Components Ltd.
