R.I. to get $11.6 million from Homeland Security, FEMA

01:00 AM EDT on Monday, July 28, 2008

WARWICK — Rhode Island state and local agencies and first responders will get a boost this year with the disbursement of $11.6 million in federal grants, Congressman James R. Langevin announced Friday.

The grants, from the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, are intended to help agencies and nonprofit entities prepare for and respond to natural and man-made disasters.

This year, FEMA and Homeland Security will award about $3 billion in grants nationally

“This funding is essential to ensure Rhode Island is prepared to respond to all types of emergencies … and has the appropriate resources to be ready for any scenario that may come our way,” Langevin said in a statement.

Efforts to reach state officials late last week for a detailed list of recipients were unsuccessful.

The funds were awarded in four categories:

•The State Homeland Security Program: $6.1 million for bomb squads, hazardous-materials and decontamination teams, and interoperable communications.

•Urban Area Security Initiative: $5 million for training and general infrastructure security in the Providence area.

•Metropolitan Medical Response Systems: $321,221 for electronic triage, patient tracking equipment, training and mobile emergency medical response equipment.

•Non Profit Security Grant: $79,391 for infrastructure improvements at Rhode Island Hospital.
