Victory Day, a uniquely Rhode Island holiday
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, August 10, 2009
It’s Victory Day, the only-in-Rhode-Island holiday commemorating Japan’s capitulation to end World War II. For some, there are ceremonies, while for others it’s an extended weekend.
The National Weather Service is predicting a high near 95 degrees. With the heat index, it could feel like 100 to 104 degrees –– or possibly higher –– for two or three hours in the afternoon. There’s a possibility of fast moving thunderstorm clusters late afternoon through Tuesday, with gusty winds, heavy rain, flood conditions, and “frequent lightning,” according to the Weather Service.
For beach goers, Gorton Pond Beach in Warwick was the only one that remained closed, due to high bacteria levels, as of Sunday. Get beach closing updates at www.ribeaches.org/closures.cfm or by calling (401) 222-2751.
