GLOCESTER — A 70-year-old Connecticut woman was killed shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday in an accident at the intersection of Putnam Pike (Route 44) and Reynolds Road (Route 94), according to Police Chief Jamie A. Hainsworth. The driver that crashed head-on into her car was drunk and has been charged with causing the woman’s death, he said.

The police identified the dead woman as Eileen Kozlowski, of 86 Main St., North Grosvenordale. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a news release, the police chief said that Anthony Muller, 25, of 44 Edwards Rd., Hampton, Conn., was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, death resulting; driving to endanger, death resulting; and driving under the influence, resulting in serious bodily injury. The passenger in his car, Ryan Dexter, 27, of 17 Bear Hill Rd., Dayville, Conn., was taken by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, as was Muller, who was arraigned at the hospital. Muller is being held for lack of $100,000 surety bail, Hainsworth said, pending his arraignment in court.

Members of the Police Department were at the hospital Sunday morning as part of their investigation, according to a dispatcher. The West Glocester and Chepachet fire departments had to use rescue tools to remove Muller and Dexter from their vehicle. Both remain hospitalized.

According to the news release, Muller was operating his car westbound on Putnam Pike “at a very high rate of speed” and upon approaching Reynolds Road, crossed over the center of the highway into the eastbound lane and sideswiped a car driven by Mario Damico, 32, of 736 Park Ave., Cranston, who was not hurt. Muller then continued traveling west in the eastbound lane and collided head-on with the car driven by Kozlowski, who was traveling alone. Hainsworth said Muller was also identified “as being involved in a hit-and-run collision with another vehicle in North Smithfield just a short time before this collision.”

(Correction: An earlier version of this story reported the wrong location for the North Smithfield collision.)
