Woman charged in protest at restaurant still hospitalized
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, August 13, 2007
NORTH PROVIDENCE — The woman injured during an encounter with the North Providence police Saturday remained hospitalized yesterday following surgery, a spokesman for the demonstrators said yesterday.
Meanwhile, the owner of the restaurant that was the scene of the demonstration said yesterday that he had already stopped doing business with the New York company that was the target of the union that organized the demonstration.
Alexandra Svoboda, 22, of Providence, could face further surgery to repair major damage to her knee, said Mark Bray, an organizer with Industrial Workers of the World, the labor organization. Citing privacy rules, Rhode Island Hospital would not release any information about Svoboda.
The police said they charged Svoboda with three counts of assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. They also charged Jason Friedmutter, 23, also of Providence, with obstructing an officer in the line of duty. Both were arraigned and released on personal recognizance because they had no previous criminal record, Sgt. Michael Paiva said yesterday.
On Saturday, the union staged the protest at Jacky’s Galaxie, a restaurant on Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence. Bray said the action was aimed at a New York restaurant supplier, Dragon Land Trading, which the union says supplies Galaxie and has mistreated its employees and violated a number of labor laws.
Bray said the group wants Kin Wa “Jacky” Ko, who owns that and other restaurants, to prove he has changed suppliers and threatened further demonstrations if he doesn’t. Ko, however, said that he stopped doing business with Dragon Land in July when he learned of the dispute. Dragon Land couldn’t be reached yesterday.
