N.H. flooding victim from N. Smithfield
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, August 10, 2008
ASHLAND, N.H. (AP) — Officials say that the family swept downstream in flooding at a campground in Ashland, N.H., was from North Smithfield, R.I.
But the fire department said yesterday it would not release the family’s name at the family’s request.
The family’s 7-year-old girl was killed in the flooding Thursday. Her body was found in the family’s crumpled SUV, which was located about 1,000 yards downstream, near the Ames Brook Campground.
The mother was found in the middle of the floodwaters, clinging to a tree and holding onto her 5-year-old son. They had been in the water for more than an hour.
Witnesses said the father got out of the vehicle just before it was swept away and screamed for help.
