First baby of the new year born to E. Providence couple
01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, January 2, 2007

PROVIDENCE — The first baby born in Rhode Island in 2007 is Sofia Layla Duque, who arrived at Women & Infants Hospital at 12:11 a.m. yesterday.
Her happy parents are Karen Duque and Deivis Duque, both 32, of East Providence. Yesterday afternoon, Sofia Layla was peacefully asleep, wrapped in pink blankets, in her mother’s lap while reporters and TV cameramen passed through the room.
She was 5 pounds, 8 ounces when she was born, prompting her father to refer to her as “our little peanut.” She was also a bit early, her mother said; she was due Jan. 10.
Her father is a sales representative for Leach and Garner, the North Attleboro manufacturer of gold and silver jewelry.
A hospital spokeswoman said said it checked with every other hospital in the state to make sure Sofia was the first Rhode Island baby of the new year.
