Police ID man who drowned in Woonsocket
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, July 21, 2008
WOONSOCKET — Officials have identified the Providence man who apparently drowned Saturday while swimming with his son and daughter at World War II Memorial State Park.
Sidney Jones, 47, of 149 Benedict St., had swum out to a concrete diving platform in the park’s pond with his 14-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter around 1 p.m., according to Lt. Frank P. Floor of the state Environmental Police.
Jones swam with his daughter about 80 feet from the platform to the shore of the pond. As he swam back toward the platform to get his son, he went under, Floor said.
Half a dozen passersby went to Jones’ aid, including a woman who performed CPR, but they were unable to revive him.
The medical examiner will determine how Jones died.
State and city officials recently announced they would begin providing a lifeguard at the pond during the week. It is unclear whether a guard was on duty when Jones died. W. Michael Sullivan, director of the Department of Environmental Management, which runs state parks, said yesterday that he does not believe a guard was on duty, but that he is not sure.
