Nurses at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital approve contract
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, October 2, 2008
NORTH PROVIDENCE — Nurses at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital yesterday overwhelmingly approved a three-year contract, ending four months of negotiations.
Represented by the United Nurses & Allied Professionals, Local 5110, the nurses voted 200 to 3 in favor of the tentative agreement that was reached Friday night between the hospital and the union.
“We set two goals for ourselves in this round of negotiations: to improve staffing and to secure a competitive wage and benefit package,” Lynn Blais, a registered nurse and local president, said in a statement announcing the deal. “With unwavering support of our membership, we were able to achieve both.”
Language regarding staffing levels was the core issue during negotiations, the statement said. Nurses, working without a contract since July 31, had picketed this summer, decrying staffing levels.
The agreement ensures 15-percent raises over three years, increases in shift differentials, on-call pay, prescription drug benefits, dental coverage, and tuition and education assistance, the statement said.
