Celebrating the OIC

A celebration to mark the revival of the OIC, an urban services center that operated in Providence for nearly 25 years, will be held Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Community College of Rhode Island, the OIC’s new partner.

The Opportunities Industrialization Center opened in 1967 to provide job training and employment services for disadvantaged residents. The center moved into a new building at One Hilton St. in l980, where it remained until shutting down in 1991. The building eventually became the home of the Liston campus of CCRI.

The OIC and CCRI will now work together to help inner-city residents meet their educational and employment goals.

The 2 to 5 p.m. celebration will feature music, a youth dance performance and the unveiling of a plaque to recognize that the OIC’s headquarters became a college campus.

Those who would like to attend should call Walter Crocker at (401) 455-6011 or e-mail him at wacrocker@ccri.edu.
