01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008

PROVIDENCE — Five hundred Dominicans from around the country are expected to participate in the 11th annual Dominican-American National Roundtable conference from Friday through Sunday at The Westin Providence hotel.

“We are very excited to bring our national conference to Providence, a city that has a long history of activism in the Dominican community,” said Victor Capellan, national president of the Dominican American National Roundtable.

The conference will open Friday with a welcome address from Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline, followed by an address by New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortes-Vasquez. The DANR will honor Dominican actor and comedian Freddy Beras-Goico with a lifetime achievement award.

Workshops and seminars will be held throughout the weekend, and awards will be presented for leadership, community service and professionalism.

The public is invited to participate in the workshops and seminars, free of charge. Registration for the full conference including meals is $165 for adults and $109 for students, seniors and veterans. For more information, visit the Web site, www.danr.org.

The DANR was established in 1997 to advocate “for the empowerment of Dominicans in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Territories,” in areas such as education, health, economic development, immigration and civic empowerment at the national level.
