Three ways to assess

Districts, charters and state-run schools were given the choice of two of three ways — senior project, portfolio and year-end exam — to assess whether seniors have shown proficiency with key concepts and skills. The vast majority chose to include portfolios, which showcase examples of a student’s work throughout high school, in their mix. Here is a breakdown in what districts, charters and state-run schools chose:

Senior projects and portfolios

Beacon (charter), Blackstone (charter), Coventry, Davies (state-run), East Greenwich, East Providence, Lincoln, MET (state-run), Middletown, North Kingstown, North Providence, Rhode Island School for the Deaf (state-run), Textron (charter), Warwick, Westerly

Senior projects and year-end exams

Barrington, Exeter-West Greenwich, Narragansett, New Shoreham, Newport, Portsmouth, Providence*, Tiverton

Portfolios and year-end exams

Bristol-Warren, Burrillville, Central Falls, Chariho, Cranston, Cumberland, Foster-Glocester, Johnston, North Smithfield, Pawtucket, Scituate, Smithfield, South Kingstown, Times{+2} (charter), West Warwick, Woonsocket.

* Providence currently allows all three options because some schools already include portfolios in their graduation requirements.
