Suspect in Cumberland stabbing case arrested
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, July 20, 2008
CUMBERLAND — A 20-year-old Cumberland man wanted in connection with the stabbing of an 18-year-old resident last month was arrested in Florida on Thursday night, according to the police.
David Lezcano was taken into custody in Fort Myers without incident by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. He faces one count of felony assault with a dangerous weapon.
Cumberland police are working with the state attorney general’s office to bring Lezcano back to Rhode Island. No permanent address for Lezcano was available from the police.
The arrest stems from an incident that happened June 23 sometime before 9:30 p.m. in the area of Currier Chase Park, on Broad Street, across the street from Town Hall, according to the police. The victim, whom the police would not identify, was with a group of friends when Lezcano reportedly approached the group.
The police would not say what caused the altercation between Lezcano and the victim or whether anyone else was involved.
The victim was stabbed at least once in the chest. Bystanders notified the police, who found the victim conscious and alert. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. The police described his wounds as non-life-threatening.
The police said Lezcano was known to the victim, but declined to elaborate.
Cumberland detectives working the State Police Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshal’s Service developed information leading to the whereabouts of Lezcano.
According to court records, Lezcano pleaded no contest last June in District Court, Providence, to a misdemeanor charge of driving with a suspended license and was fined.
