Events set in Rhode Island for National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, April 26, 2009

PROVIDENCE — A series of events will be held in the state this week in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA).

The events, which coincide with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, are being sponsored by Rhode Island General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio, the Crime Victim Compensation Program and the Crime Victim Service Providers Steering Committee.

“Before VOCA, victims of violent crime in Rhode Island were too often the forgotten people in the criminal justice system,” Caprio said. “Now they have a bill of rights and a source of funding for critical services. Without VOCA thousands of crime victims would face tough choices in getting the care they need.”

The events in Rhode Island include:

•A motorcycle rally Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., which kicks off at the State House, Smith Street, Providence. Registration for the rally, which is open to the public, runs from noon to 1 p.m. The ride is free and refreshments will be served.

•A ceremony Monday celebrating VOCA’s 25th anniversary from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Rhode Island College School of Social Work, 600 Mount Pleasant Ave., Providence.

•A ceremony Wednesday from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the Victims’ Memorial Grove, South Main Street, Providence. The ceremony in the garden across from the Licht Judicial Complex will honor all victims of crime.

•A 25th anniversary celebration, also on Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Providence Children’s Museum, 100 South St., Providence. The celebration, open to the public, includes free admission to the museum for all guests. Pizza and cake will be provided.

•A conference on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Roger Williams University’s Portsmouth campus, 144 Anthony Rd. The conference is free to the public and aims to promote awareness of VOCA. The agenda includes a talk, “Children, Loss and Resiliency as it Relates to Crime Victims and their Families,” to be given by guest speaker Maria Trozzi, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Boston University School of Medicine.
