CENTRAL FALLS – Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau is offering $50 of his own money for each gun, rifle or shotgun turned in during a gun buyback scheduled for Saturday at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility’s training center.

Moreau hopes to reduce crimes involving guns in the city. “Anytime you can take a gun off the city streets, you reduce the potential for violent criminal activity,” Moreau said in a news release.

The buyback, which is open to anyone, no questions asked, is sponsored by the city, the Central Falls Police Department and the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility.

Police Chief Joseph Moran III said that the city is trying to avoid incidents such as the back-to-back shootings in April 2008 in which two teenagers were killed, including a 16-year-old Central Falls High School student.

Moreau could not be reached for comment but Moran said as public safety director, he wants to show he is serious about preventing violent crime in the city. He likened what Moreau is doing to what General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio did in 2007, when he dug into his own pocket to pay $30,000 in towing fees for people who had their cars tagged and towed during a snowstorm.

The police will receive any guns from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wyatt training center, at 950 High St.
