01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, June 7, 2009
BURRILLVILLE — A 20-year-old Pascoag driver faces charges after allegedly striking a child who had just gotten off a school bus and leaving the scene of the accident, the police said.
Paul Desjardins Jr., of 75 Park Place, was arrested Friday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury, the police said. Desjardins was arraigned Saturday morning before Bail Commissioner Patricia Coyne-Fague and released on $5,000 personal recognizance.
Desjardins was driving on West Road at 3:30 p.m. Friday when he passed a school bus with its red lights flashing as it discharged students, the police said. Desjardins passed the bus on its left and struck 7-year-old Ryan O’Connor, of West Road, as he was crossing the street in front of the bus, according to the police.
O’Connor was treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital for a head injury, the police said. He was later released.
Desjardins was arrested Friday night at 8:15 on Main Street in Pascoag by Officer Brian Pitts.
