Woman charged with embezzling from Burrillville endowment

The former clerk and treasurer of the board that manages Burrillville’s endowment has been indicted on a charge of embezzling, the police said Wednesday.

Since 1995, Deborah A. Carr, 52, of 633 East Wallum Lake Rd., was clerk and treasurer of the Board of Administration, which manages the endowment set up by the town’s benefactor, industrialist Austin T. Levy. In January 2008, her employment was terminated. On Tuesday, she was arraigned on a felony embezzlement charge in Providence County Superior Court, Burrillville police Lt. Kevin S. San Antonio said Wednesday.

Town officials, concerned about the endowment, had asked for a police investigation, and in July, Detective Sgt. Guy Riendeau was assigned to the case. An audit by the accounting firm of Cayer Caccia found inconsistencies such as checks written to financial institutions that had no connection with the board that manages the endowment.

Carr declined to cooperate with the board or to surrender its books to the auditor or investigator, San Antonio said Wednesday. The investigation alleged that she had converted checks for her own use and paid personal debts in excess of $75,000, he said.

Special Magistrate Patrick Burke heard Carr’s plea of not guilty and released her on $10,000 personal recognizance. A pretrial hearing will be held Nov. 16.
