Nationwide, the number of couriers and messengers dropped from 134,370 in 1999 to 105,070 in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor. The trend is reflected in Rhode Island, where the number of couriers and messengers dropped from 480 in 1999 to 400 in 2006.
