Billy Gilman

At the age of 12, Hope Valley's Billy Gilman is making news with two nominations based on his debut album One Voice: Best Country Song (penned by Don Cook and Dave Malloy) and Best Male Country Vocal Performance, where he challenged veterans Johnny Cash, Vince Gill, Tim McGraw and Dwight Yoakam. Gilman lost the Best Male Country Vocal Performance to Johnny Cash, who won for his cover of Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man." Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sellers won Best Country Song, performed by Lee Ann Womack.

Sugar Ray Norcia
Exeter's Sugar Ray Norcia was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues Album category. His disc Superharps (Telarc Blues) includes three Sugar Ray originals and features bluesmasters James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite and Billy Branch.

Like Gilman, Sugar Ray faced stiff competition from big names — including Willie Nelson, B.B. King, and a B.B King-Eric Clapton collaboration. Clapton and King's Riding With The King won out.
