Die Fledermaus at the Columbus
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008
Opera Providence wraps up its season this weekend with two performances of Johann Strauss Jr.’s Die Fledermaus.
The popular comedy will be sung in English with minimal staging. And the cast features a number of local favorites. Baritone Rene de la Garza sings the role of Dr. Falke, who sets out to exact revenge on his friend Baron Eisenstein at a masquerade ball. Falke is still upset that Eisenstein, sung by tenor Fred Scheff, left him drunk after last year’s ball to find his way home in a bat outfit.
Mezzo Gigi Mitchell-Velasco sings the trouser role of eccentric Prince Orlofsky, host of the costume ball, and Patrice Tiedemann appears in the coloratura role of Rosalinda, Eisenstein’s wife.
Performances take place tomorrow night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 3 at the Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway, Providence. Tickets are $20, $35 and $60, with discounts for seniors and students. Call (401) 331-6060 or (401) 621-6123, or log on to www.arttixri.com.
