R.I. Philharmonic opens with Beethoven’s Fifth
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, October 11, 2007
J. Henry Fair
Think Beethoven and you’ll probably think the Fifth Symphony, the composer’s signature work with its arresting “fate knocking” theme.
And you can hear this remarkable work Saturday night, when the Rhode Island Philharmonic kicks off its 63rd season at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
Hearing the Beethoven on record is always a treat, but hearing it live can be hair-raising.
The Philharmonic, under conductor Larry Rachleff, opens the program with Richard Strauss’ heroic tone poem Don Juan. Canadian-born violinist Corey Cerovsek will be on hand for the Prokofiev Second Concerto.
The concert takes place at 8 p.m. and tickets range from $27 to $65, with discounts for seniors and students. Call (401) 248-7000.
