Foundling orchestra welcomes Sanford Sylvan

01:00 AM EST on Thursday, January 8, 2009

Acclaimed baritone Sanford Sylvan joins Foundling, the all-female Baroque orchestra, Sunday afternoon at Grace Church in downtown Providence for a program of Bach vocal and instrumental music. Sylvan, who has earned three Grammy nominations for his recordings with pianist David Breitman, will be tackling the magnificent cantata Ich habe genug, or I Have Enough, and he will be teaming up with resident soprano Pamela Murray for the dialogue cantata Beloved Jesus, My Desire. Sylvan has appeared with leading orchestras of the world and with New York City Opera, among other companies. He has been closely associated with the directing of Peter Sellars, especially his controversial Mozart operas, and composer John Adams who has written opera parts for him, including the lead for his The Death of Klinghoffer.

Rounding out the program will be the concerto for oboe, violin and strings with Baroque oboist Washington McClain and violinist Dana Maiben, the group’s music director and concertmaster.

This is the fifth season for Foundling, which varies in size, depending on the music it is playing. The members, who come from all over the country, perform in T-shirts and jeans and play with elegance and an exquisite sense of style. Foundling also doubles as a women’s advocacy group and collects clothes and personal care items for women in shelters.

Sunday’s concert takes place at 3:30 p.m. at Grace Church, Mathewson and Westminster Streets. Tickets are $50 for donors, $25, $20 for seniors and $10 for students and low-income patrons. Call (401) 621-6123.
