Music scene by Rick Massimo: The Dino Club making music about the movies

01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, April 28, 2005

The Dino Club's last release, 2002's Hey! Drink Up, was a collection of songs about the drinking/nightclub life. Now Mark Cutler and the boys are out with Bright Screen Wide, about another popular musicians' hobby: the movies.

"Lee Marvin's Eyes" is a tribute to a cool killer; "How the West Wasn't Won" references the immortal Shane; "The Trailers" is about -- well, you can tell. And all of them are given the near-twang of the longtime Cutler-Emerson-Torrey guitar interplay that goes back to The Schemers, the irrepressible bounce of drummer Bob Giusti and Cutler's voice, which recalls Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw and something world-weary in between.

The Dino Club celebrates the release of Big Screen Wide Saturday night at the Green Room, 145 Clifford St., Providence.

Trusty at Stone Soup

The Fourth Street String Band can't make it to the Stone Soup Coffeehouse Saturday night, but the venue hasn't lost a step by substituting the mighty Kim Trusty. Her Sweet Novena CD, released in November, is one of the best local releases in a long time. I'd hoped that that would mean a lot more local shows, but this is, unfortunately, a still-rare chance to see her.

Trusty has a voice so powerful that it doesn't have to indulge in diva-esque histrionics, and when she feels like cranking it up she'll blow you away. I'd go hear her sing the phone book, but fortunately, her mix of jazz, folk and blues shows off her voice even better.

Stone Soup is in the Arts Center of the Boys & Girls Club, at 210 Main St., Pawtucket. Tickets are $10.
