Estafan, Joel, kick off busy summer season
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, May 18, 2008

Billy Joel will do 10 shows over a six-week period at Mohegan Sun.
The Friday-night faceoff between Gloria Estefan at the new MGM Grand at Foxwoods and Billy Joel at the Mohegan Sun Arena (the first of 10 shows for Joel between Friday and early July) is just the beginning of a packed concert season in southern New England that includes plenty of action not only at the casinos but at longtime summer staples in the area.
In Providence, the SoundSession festival runs July 6 to 12 and will bring a wealth of acts from different genres to what organizers promise is an expanded list of venues; the Snapple Sunset Music Festival brings big names to Newport over a smattering of dates this summer, and the Newport Folk Festival takes a rock-driven turn in August, followed of course by the JVC Jazz Festival Newport, which will bring stars such as Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock to Fort Adams.
And while the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and Providence Performing Arts Center are dark in terms of pop music, there’s always the Tweeter Center, in Mansfield, Mass., for the big names in the summer-tour universe, as well as forward-looking all-day road shows such as the Warped Tour.
