Short Takes: Five Harry Potter films to be shown for free
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, June 12, 2009
Get ready all you junior wizards. Hogwarts and Dumbledore are calling.
Everyone who loves the Harry Potter books probably already knows that the next-in-line screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s hugely popular book series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will arrive in theaters July 15.
To get a leg up on the new film — and to provide background for those who may have missed one of the previous five films or books — the Providence Public Library comes to the rescue with free showings of all five films on Mondays beginning Monday in the auditorium of the Central Library, 150 Empire St. The last screening will be held July 13, just in time for the release of Half-Blood Prince.
The films will be shown in order of their place in the original book series beginning Monday with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone going on screen at 1 and 5:30 p.m. It will be followed June 22 by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets at 1 and 5 p.m.; on June 29 by Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at 1 and 5:30 p.m.; on July 6 by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at 1 and 6:30 p.m.; and on July 13 by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at 1 and 6:30 p.m.
The first three films in the series are rated PG; the last two PG-13.
Festival-goers may also enter in person at the screenings for a chance to win a Harry Potter box set of all seven books in the series.
Gay film gets a preview
In celebration of Gay Pride Month, the Rhode Island International Film Festival is giving a preview Saturday of one of the homosexual-themed films that will later be screened in its Providence GLBT Film Festival which is a sidebar to the main festival that will run Aug. 4 to 9.
Director Rob Williams’ comedy Make the Yuletide Gay will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in the Bell Street Chapel, 5 Bell St., Providence. The film revolves around a college student who tries to hide his homosexuality from his parents during a holiday visit, something made more difficult when his boyfriend shows up unannounced.
Tickets are $10 at the door, $1 of which will be donated to Marriage Equality RI.
