Sen. Barack Obama is justly basking in the glow of an astounding achievement. Barely three years after serving as an obscure Illinois state legislator, he has become the first black to virtually secure a major party’s nomination for president. He did it with a name that sounds strange to many American ears, with a dearth of executive experience, and with a voting record that by U.S. Senate standards is on the left.
