High-speed chase ends at gunpoint

01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

SOMERSET — A high-speed police chase that stretched about five miles through town before dawn on Saturday led to the arrest, at gunpoint, of a Fall River man on multiple charges.

The police said Sean D. Sullivan, 27, of 860 Slade St., raced through town at speeds of more than 90 mph after an officer reported seeing his white Nissan improperly pass another car on Brayton Avenue around 2:18 a.m.

That led to a chase north on Brayton, east on Chace Street, south on County Street, west on Wood Street, through several side streets until he was stopped on Buffinton Street at Hinchey Lane.

Even when he was trapped by two police cars, he acted as if he was going to ram one car, then tried to pull his car away, prompting Patrolman Nicholas Davidson to draw his gun.

Although his speed was fast, the police said his speech was slow, apparently from intoxication. He refused to take a breath test.

He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for a police officer, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Sullivan was released on $100 personal recognizance and ordered back to court Sept. 6.
