Ceremony set at Hendricken for fallen Marine
12:06 AM EDT on Thursday, May 17, 2007
WARWICK — A memorial service will be held tomorrow at Bishop Hendricken High School for Marine Lance Cpl. Eric Valdepenas, a 21-year-old Hendricken graduate who died in Iraq last September.
Valdepenas, of Seekonk, will be remembered during the halftime of Friday’s home lacrosse game, which begins at 6 p.m. Coach Kevin Murray, surrounded by Valdepenas’ Marine comrades and the Bishop Hendricken community, will present the Valdepenas family with the Marine’s No. 25 lacrosse jersey.
Valdepenas, who graduated from Hendricken in 2003, was co-captain of the Hawks’ lacrosse team and an all-state lacrosse player. He was an engineering student at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst before his reserve unit, the 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, weapons company, was deployed to Iraq in March 2006. The unit, based in Ayer, Mass., is scheduled to return late next month.
Valdepenas was on patrol in Fallujah when his vehicle was struck by a bomb, known as an “improvised explosive device.” He was the youngest of eight children. Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers and five sisters.
Following the 10-minute ceremony, Valdepenas’ jersey will remain mounted in the school as a permanent remembrance in the place where the star athlete and honors student spent his high school years.
Visitors to the ceremony will have a chance to purchase an American flag pin for $10, with proceeds going to the Lance Cpl. Eric Paul Valdepenas Memorial Fund at Bishop Hendricken. Donations may be made to the fund at Bishop Hendricken, 2615 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, R.I. 02889. For more information, contact Nora Valdepenas, his sister, at (401) 829-2660.
