Fall River

•Navy Seaman Recruit Nicholas J. Massa, a 2006 graduate of Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Fall River, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

•The Diocesan Health Facilities held its annual awards banquet at White’s of Westport.

Included in the ceremony was the award of $2,500 scholarships to: Crystal Benevides, C.N.A., Catholic Memorial Home, LPN program at Diman Regional Vocational High School; Anita B. Semedo, C.N.A., Madonna Manor, R.N. studies at Community College of Rhode Island; Jedediah Holland, L.P.N., Marian Manor, R.N. program at Curry College; Ana Barreira. C.N.A., Our Lady’s Haven, R.N. program at Bristol Community College; Matthew Boyd II, cook, Sacred Heart Home, sociology at UMass/Dartmouth; Melanie Joseph, Business Office Manager at Our Lady’s Haven, business administration at Fisher College.

Reflection of Mission recipients are: Catholic Memorial Home, Bill Cyr, maintenance coordinator, employed at the home, 27 years; Madonna Manor, Susan Lopes, C.N.A. employed 7½ years; Marian Manor, Robin Chaves, scheduling coordinator, employed 13 years; Our Lady’s Haven, Cecilia D’Almeida, Alzheimer’s activity coordinator, employed 7½ years; and Sacred Heart Home, Suzanne Walsh, L.P.N., employed 13½ years.

•Bristol Community College honored Allyson Pereira, of Westport, as the culinarian valedictorian. She earned associate’s degrees in culinary arts and general studies, and won a silver medal from last year’s Skills USA national competition in Kansas City, Mo., and a gold medal in the state competition this year. Pereira graduated with a 3.92 grade point average. She was the first BCC culinary student to participate in the BCC Commonwealth Honors Program, which pairs students with faculty mentors to pursue an advanced academic project. She has provided service to the community by tutoring students from Newport Area Career and Technical Center and Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Next year Pereira will attend Johnson & Wales University to complete a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts.

Rehoboth

•Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Patrick L. Darcey, son of Valerie A. and Lawrence J. Darcey, of Rehoboth, recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps.

Darcey is a 2002 graduate of Bishop Feehan High School.

Seekonk

•Seekonk residents Nicholas Cokonis and Lucas Duffey were among several student leaders who were recognized for their school service at the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School Leadership Breakfast May 9.

•Wooden chairs that were personalized and painted by local high school students were on display for public viewing throughout Seekonk Public Library last month. The chairs were the focus of a class sponsored by the library and supervised by artist Sharlot McEnery, of Seekonk. Nine students participated in the class: Katie Fontes, Mac McEnery, Bob Greggerson, Tyler Rosenholm, Laura Berg, Thea Raposo, Brendan McCabe, Zachery Holme, and Carley McEnery.

•At the last St. Mary’s Senior Saints meeting, Dot Palana won the meeting’s door prize. Pot of gold winners were Gene Wallin, Louise Martin, Roseann Donato, Evelyn Tetreault and Anna Lavoie.

•Several Seekonk students have been named to Providence College’s spring 2008 semester dean’s list. They are: Elizabeth Hinton, Laura Tavares, Melissa Buffrey, Nancy Andrade, Nicole Amaral and Pamela Cummings. Andrade was honored for receiving the highest academic record in global studies. She will pursue an intern with the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Nicaragua and also with ProWorld in Peru.

Somerset

•Ashley Vieira, of Somerset, was named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College Art and Design, in Savannah, Ga., for the winter quarter.

•Army Pvt. Ryan J. Hattub has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Hattub is the son of George and Deniese Hattub, of Somerset. He graduated in 2005 from Somerset High School.

Swansea

•Students at New England Christian Academy of Swansea staged a two-week food drive for poor residents of the Dominican Republic and collected more than four tons of dried beans and rice.

A total of 8,605 pounds of food was collected, including 5,955 pounds of rice and 2,650 pounds of dried beans. Seventh-grader Alyssa Manter generated the largest contributions with a total of 498 pounds, followed closely by her brother, Jason Manter, in the sixth grade, with 459 pounds.

Charlotte Raine, a sixth-grade student at New England Christian Academy placed first in the Middle School Division during the 11th annual Massachusetts Science and Engineering Fair held in Worcester.

Raine finished tops for her project titled “DNA in Fruit.” A total of 226 students participated in the event.

In addition to her first-place finish at the state fair, Raine received a cash award for her project from the Genzyme Corp. of Cambridge.
