Regional
•State Commander George Goncalves, of Halifax, led the Massachusetts Delegation to the 90th American Legion National Convention, in Phoenix, Ariz., from Aug. 23 to 28.
Representing Bristol County were Leo Bernier, of Swansea, Billy Dolin, of Swansea, and Donald Kinninburgh, of Seekonk.
Fall River
•The Citizens Scholarship Foundation Dollars for Scholars of Fall River awarded its Superintendent John R. Correiro Memorial Scholarships to Joshua Needham, a sophomore at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Allison Klamkin, a student at Hofstra University.
Other scholarships the foundation awarded went to Samuel Cordeiro, a sophomore at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, who received the Fred Houle Memorial Scholarship and Amber Mello, a sophomore at Quinnipiac University, who received the Edward Stevens Community Service Award.
All students are Fall River residents.
Seekonk
•Army Pvt. Joseph C. Charlonne has graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
Charlonne is the son of Catherine Charlonne, and grandson of Edwina Charlonne, both of Seekonk. He graduated from Seekonk High School in 2005.
Navy Seaman Recruit Daniel R. Paradis, son of Heidi K. and William E. Paradis, of Seekonk, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Paradis is a 2005 graduate of Seekonk High School.
Somerset
•Megan Oliveira, of Somerset, is among 100 of this year’s KFC Colonel’s Scholars. Oliveira took several A.P. courses and volunteered at a local soup kitchen. She is a member of the National Honor Society and captain of the cross-country team. This fall, Oliveira will study at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
She was selected from more than 70,000 applicants and will be awarded with up to $20,000 in scholarships for her accomplishments.
Colonel’s Scholars is an independent charity supported by KFC that has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships since its inception.
Swansea
•Zachary W. Eldridge, of Swansea, was recognized for academic achievement as a United States National Honor Student Award winner.
Eldridge, a student at Case Junior High School, will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s Official Yearbook.
He is the son of Susan Eldridge, of Swansea, and Dean Eldridge, of Sharon, Mass.
