01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Regional

Catholic Social Services: Catholic Social Services, 1600 Bay St., in Fall River, will host a free training, “Understanding Infant Adoption,” tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The training is for physicians, nurses, nursing students, social workers, guidance counselors and any other staff who provide services to pregnant women. The focus of the training session is to assist individuals in discussing adoption issues with birth parents who may have questions about, or be struggling with, the option of adoption for their child. Four continuing education credits are available for social workers and nurses; all others will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Lunch will be provided at no charge.

Topics will include nondirective, noncoercive counseling techniques, special issues in counseling teens, adoption law and practice in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and birth parents’ rights and responsibilities.

Online registration is available at www.iaatp.com or an e-mail can be sent to Elaine Abdow at eca@cssdioc.org with “infant adoption training” in the subject line. Questions can be directed to Elaine Abdow.

Candor meeting: Candor: Sharing our stories, a cancer survivors meeting for women in all stages of survivorship, will meet Thursday in Somerset Public Library, 1464 County St., in Somerset, from 6 to 7 p.m. Being with others who know what you are going through can be a great source of support. The group meets the last Thursday of every month. For more information, call Lynn Silvia at 674-6867.

Seekonk

Knitting class: A series of five knitting classes will be held at Seekonk Public Library, 410 Newman Ave., beginning tonight at 6.

Martha Maynard, an experienced knitter and two-time winner at the Eastern States Exposition for spinning and weaving, will show how fun knitting is. All who attend must bring size 9 or 10 knitting needles and worsted weight light color yarn.

Registration is required. The class is open to either Massachusetts residents with a SAILS library card or Rhode Island residents with a Seekonk Public Library card. Call the Adult Services Department at 336-8230, ext. 130 to register. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Seekonk Public Library.

Volunteers sought: Seekonk is looking for volunteers to serve on the following boards: Board of Health, Cultural Council, Finance Committee, Municipal Capital Improvement Committee, Property Tax Work Off Committee, Recycling Committee and the Zoning Board of Appeals. Interested volunteers are asked to pick up a Talent Bank Form from the Selectman’s Office, 100 Peck St., or call (508) 336-2910.
