Many Voices at Prayer: A public time of prayer and praise, entitled Many Voices at Prayer, will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Louis de France Roman Catholic Church, 56 Buffington St., Swansea.

Many Voices at Prayer is an interfaith service of worship in which clergy and laity from a variety of faiths participate. The event is designed to give a faithful and cooperative witness to wider communities.

Participating congregations from Swansea include St. Louis de France Roman Catholic Church, First Baptist in Swansea and Christ Church Episcopal. Representing Somerset will be the Congregational Christian Church, Harvest Family Church and the Church of Our Savior Episcopal. Cantor Richard Wolberg will represent Temple Beth El, in Fall River. Also participating will be chaplains from Hospice and Pallitive Care of Southeastern Massachusetts.

The event will include congregational singing, as well as music by the Harmony/Grace Band from Swansea’s First Baptist and musicians from St. Louis de France. Also included will be reflections on various psalms and a time of prayer.

Celiac Support Group: The Celiac Support Group of Southeastern New England is holding an informational meeting Sunday at St. Theresa’s Church hall, 265 Stafford Rd., Tiverton. Registration will be held at 1:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 2 p.m.

Celiac Sprue is a disorder of the small intestines caused by sensitivity to the protein gluten.

Awards ceremony preparations: The Academic Center for Entrepreneurship at Bristol Community College will hold the 2008 Entrepreneurship Expo and Awards Ceremony Nov. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Business support services companies are being sought to exhibit their products and services at the event. The segment provides a forum for business support companies to showcase their services to a diverse group of upcoming and existing businesses owners and to network. In addition, nominations for the awards are being accepted.

Activities include a program by Steve Silverstein, owner of Not Your Average Joe’s restaurant, workshops on small-business topics, an exposition of business support services, an awards ceremony and a food-and-beverage reception.

Award catetories include Developing Entrepreneur, Cornerstone Entrepreneur and Benevolent Entrepreneur. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the center’s Web site and e-mailed to ACE. The group also accepts forms via mail or fax.

Arts Around The Block: The Lower Highlands/Historic Downtown Neighborhood Association will hold its Arts Around The Block festival Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The group is looking for artists, craftspeople, musicians and organizations that would like to be a part of the festival. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are available on the four blocks of Purchase Street from Bank Street to Cherry Street. Rehoboth

Community dance: A free community dance will be held at Goff Memorial Hall, 124 Bay State Rd., Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The dance is hosted by the Sunday Night Jammers, a group of area musicians who meet regularly on Sunday evenings at Goff Hall to play Celtic dance music. The dance will feature contra dance steps and a variety of international and couples dances, such as polkas and waltzes. All dance steps will be taught.

Seekonk

Safe boating: Flotilla 87 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering eight-lesson safe boating classes.

The major topics covered are boat handling, seamanship, safety and legal requirements, trailering your boat and marine engines.

The cost of the textbook is $35. The course starts Monday and runs for four weeks, from 7 to 9 p.m. The class location in Seekonk is to be determined.

Somerset

SAT prep: The Somerset Community School program will begin SAT prep courses tomorrow. Classes are held every Saturday between 8 and 11:15 a.m. at Somerset High School, 270 Grandview Ave. The class is open to all area high school students, but class size is limited. Registration is required. The registration deadline is today. To register, call the the Somerset Community School office at 324-3146.

Oktoberfest: The Somerset Progressive Fishing Club will hold its eighth annual Oktoberfest Oct. 4 from 7 p.m. to midnight in the club hall, 139 Seaver Ave.

Music for dancing and karaoke will be provided by DJ Danny McBride. A hot buffet will be catered by Donna and Mike. The club will have its special raffle of gift certificates and assorted prizes.

Tickets are $13 each in advance at the Progressive Club bar or from Fishing Club members until Oct. 1.

At the library: The Friends of the Somerset Public Library will hold its biennial Somerset art show next week. The show begins Monday and will run through Sept. 27.

All artists, professional and non-professional, are invited to display their work at the library, 1464 County St. Those who would like to display their work must live or work in Somerset, or be a member of the Friends of the Somerset Public Library. Artists can also join the Friends prior to the art show.

Artwork will be on display during regular library hours. An artists reception will be held Sept. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m., so those attending have a chance to meet the artists. Entry forms are available at the Somerset Public Library, along with details about the show.

Swansea

Walk for Autism: Community Autism Resources is hosting its annual Hearts and Hands Walk for Autism and Family Fun Day tomorrow at the Fall River campus of Bristol Community College, 777 Elsbree St., from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event will include lunch and snacks, a bounce house, face painting and temporary tattoos, a treasure hunt, carnival games and prizes and arts and crafts.

Weekend Navagator class: The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 84 offers a Weekend Navigator course, a brand new, comprehensive course to prepare the boater with the knowledge needed to safely pilot a boat. The eight-week program will be held in the lecture hall at Somerset High School, on Route 138, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday nights, beginning next week.

As American as apple pie: Swansea Public Library, 69 Main St., will hold its first annual apple pie baking contest, Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The contest, sponsored by the Swansea Public Library Homemade Pie Committee, will have two categories: amateur bakers age 16 and up and aspiring pastry chefs age 15 and under. Ribbons will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners.

Registration is required and should include a copy of your recipe. Applications and contest rules are available at the library and on its Web site.

Judging will be based on flavor, filling, crust, appearance and creativity. Winners will be announced Tuesday and slices will be for sale afterward. There is no charge to enter.
