Baby-sitting preparation: Women & Infants’ Center for Health Education, 2200 G.A.R. Highway, in Swansea, will hold a two-day baby-sitting academy for preteens or teens who are at least age 11 and interested in baby-sitting Oct 18 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Future baby-sitters will learn about child growth and development, age-appropriate games, discipline techniques that are positive and work, home safety suggestions, marketing themselves as a sitter, and complete accident prevention and CPR training.

Exhibit to open: The College of Visual & Performing Arts Gallery at UMass Dartmouth will open “Roy Dawes: Mod Props” Oct. 16, with a closing reception Oct. 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. Works on exhibit will be from Dawes’ “Lotus” and “Mod Props” series, as well as a site-specific painting created in the gallery by the artist.

The gallery is on the first floor of the Visual and Performing Arts building on campus, 285 Old Westport Rd., North Dartmouth. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Patrons are advised to use parking lot 7A. For information, contact Jarrad Nunes, 999-8010.

Fall River

Seminar on violence: The Fall River Diocesan Council of Catholic Nurses will host a seminar titled “Whom Do You Trust? The Many Faces of Violence,” Oct. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at White’s of Westport. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. Stamp club: The Fall River Stamp Club will meet Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the conference room at Stop & Shop, Marianno Bishop Boulevard. The club meets the second Tuesday of every month at this location. All adult stamp collectors from the surrounding communities are welcome. Meetings include discussions on stamps, slide shows and swap sessions. Seekonk

Library program: Seekonk Public Library, 410 Newman Ave., will hold a presentation on knitting by Kathy Goldner, founder of Knitting Out Loud audiobook publishing company, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

The hourlong presentation, illustrated with photographs, knitted items and antiques from Goldner’s own collection, explores the world of knitting past and present. The program is free to all.
