Birthing boot camp: Southcoast offers a variety of childbirth classes to suit every new family’s needs. Pre-registration is required for all classes. Call during the 16th week (10 to 12 weeks for multiples) of pregnancy to assure placement in the class you need. Many health insurance companies cover the cost of classes. Birthing Boot Camp will be held at Charlton Memorial Hospital, 363 Highland Ave., in Fall River, beginning Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other camp dates include Aug. 2 and Sept. 6.The fee is $125 per mother and companion. Baby-sitting class: Women & Infants’ Center for Health Education, 2200 G.A.R. Highway, in Swansea, will hold its two-day baby-sitting academy for youths who are at least age 11 Saturday and July 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The workshop will teach participants about child development, effective discipline techniques, age appropriate games, accident prevention and safety measures, first aid for scrapes and bruises and complete cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for infants, children and adults.

Bereavement program: Community VNA Hospice Care, 10 Emory St., in Attleboro, is hosting a free children’s bereavement program Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Kids’ Club is open to children ages 5 to 13 who have experienced the personal loss of a family member or friend. The bereavement program incorporates a creative approach to dealing with grief. Children participate in activities such as crafts, fabric painting, memory books and sharing.

Pow wow: The 18th annual Somerset Honor Our Elders Pow Wow will be held Saturday and Sunday rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., behind North Elementary School, Whetstone Hill Road. A grand entry will be done at 12:30 p.m.

Admission is free. Those who plan on attending are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Drugs, alcohol and politics are not allowed at the event.

Series first lecture: The Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth announced the first lecture in its Portuguese Cultural Series will be held today. The lecture “From Sappho to Sophia and Beyond: Towards a History of Portuguese Women’s Poetry,” by Prof. Anna M. Klobucka, of the department of Portuguese, will meet at 11:30 a.m. in the Browsing Area of the Claire T. Carney Library, 285 Old Westport Rd., in North Dartmouth.

Fall River

Golf tournament: The Diabetes Association Inc., 170 Pleasant St., will hold its 16th annual golf tournament in memory of Jack Rua, at the Fall River Country Club, Monday.

Jack Rua was the father of a DAI patient and remained involved with the DAI as a board member and volunteer until his death in 2003.

The tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Golfers will have the opportunity to win a car in a Hole in One contest. After the tournament, an awards dinner will be held and prizes will be distributed and raffle winners will be announced. The cost is $175 per golfer or $600 per foursome. Tee signs are available to businesses and individuals that would like to support the cause for $150 per sign. Sponsorship levels beginning at $150 are available. Rehoboth

Community dance: A free community dance will be held Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., in Goff Memorial Hall, 124 Bay State Rd. The dance is hosted by the Sunday Night Jammers, a group of area musicians who meet regularly on Sunday evenings at Goff Hall to play Celtic dance music.

The dance will feature contra dance steps and a variety of international and couple dances, such as polkas and waltzes. All dance steps will be taught.

Office hours: Rep. Steve D’Amico will hold office hours Monday at Rehoboth’s Blanding Library, 124 Bay State Rd., from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Rehoboth Senior Citizens’ Club: Although Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club doesn’t hold meetings in July and August, the club has several events planned for the summer.

The club’s Spirit of Boston trip on Wednesday is sold out.

The annual picnic will be held Aug. 28 at Francis Farm, 27 Francis Farm Rd., at 11 a.m. On the menu will be chowder and clamcakes served at 11:30 a.m.

Entertainment will be provided by country western band Jeannie Lovering & Chameleon from noon to 2 p.m. Also being served at the picnic will be burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad. The picnic will include Bingo, Bocce, and Horseshoes for those who wish to participate. The cost is $13 for active members and $20 for all others. Trips on the club’s agenda include: a three day trip to Atlantic City, Sept 28 to Sept. 30. Staying at the Tropicana. Trip includes $20 bonus on arrival, two free brunches a free show and round trip bus transportation. The price is $205 per person double occupancy; an Oct. 28 day trip to Foxwoods. The cost is $19 per person and includes round trip bus transportation and free buffet and keno; A Nov. 13 trip to New York City’s Radio City Music Hall to see The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. The cost is $109 per person and includes orchestra seating and round trip bus transportation.

All trips include driver’s gratuities and are open to the public. Most trips will have pick up and drop off points in Rehoboth and South Attleboro.

Tractor and Truck Association meets: New England Antique Tractor and Truck Association will continue to meet in the summer on Wednesday and Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at Francis Farm, 27 Francis Farm Rd.

The organization is open to men, women and children who have an interest in antique tractors and trucks.

Seekonk

Summer Saunters: Caratunk Wildlife Refuge will host a leisurely hike this month The hike will be held Saturday and July 26. The program’s fee is $8 per adult member and $4 per child member; $12 per adult nonmember and $6 per child nonmember. The program is for ages 5 and up. Swansea

Boating safety: Coastie, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary mascot, will visit with children from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Swansea Boat Ramp. Parents are welcome to bring their children to meet Coastie, who will conduct boating safety lessons. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Somerset Flotilla 8-4 will be holding a National Safe Boating Day 2008 by offering free Vessel Safety Checks to boaters Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Swansea Boat Ramp.

The Vessel Safety Check process is easy and can usually be completed in less than 15 minutes.

Westport

Book fair: The 47th Annual Westport Quaker Book Fair will open Saturday, rain or shine and at 11 a.m., on meeting house grounds, 938 Main Rd. The book fair will continue from dawn to dusk for the next few weeks.

More than 25,000 used and nearly new books individually priced at approximately 10 percent of their original prices will be sold. On the first day the books will be arranged by individual categories in two extra large tents; one tent fiction, one tent nonfiction. Also there will be a third large tent selling light refreshments and children’s books. There will be some even less expensive books priced at 25 cents each or 6 for a $1. On the first day only, there will be a better book section with books priced accordingly.

Some of the categories under the fiction tent will include literature, novels, romance, mystery, sci-fi and fantasy; both hardbound and paperback. The nonfiction tent will include history, media personalities, science, education, health, hobbies, gardening, humor, local color, travel, sports, boating, psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, art, music and large print.

Yard sale: Westport Lions will sponsor its annual summer yard sale Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Country Hair Care Salon parking lot, 908 Main Rd. A July 20 rain date has been reserved.

Money raised by the Lions’ Club will be used for eye research, scholarships, camperships and in the community.

Kayak adventures: Children ages 12 through 15 will be able to explore sections of the Westport River, from the Head of Westport to its mouth at Westport Harbor in an outdoor adventure with the Westport River Watershed Alliance this summer. The weeklong, summer program, Watershed Explorers includes, three days of kayaking on the river with Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures, and two days of exploring the coastal habitats at Westport’s Town Beach. Participants will discover and learn about the creatures of the forest, wetland, freshwater, estuary and marine habitats in this region.

The program is being offered two weeks this summer Monday through July 18 and Aug. 11 through 15, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. The cost is $360 for the week for Westport River Watershed Alliance members; nonmembers, $390; and includes three days of kayak rentals.
