CALENDAR

ARTS IN THE VILLAGE: A swing dance with Rory MacLeod and the Bishop's Castle Band, the final event of this year's Rehoboth Antiquarian Society's Arts in the Village series, will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Goff Memorial Hall, 124 Bay State Rd. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door. Patrons may come just to listen to the band.

A former member of Roomful of Blues who has performed with the Duke Robillard Band and blues legend B.B. King, MacLeod has been nominated for a Grammy and two WC Handy Blues Awards.

COMMUNITY NOTES

SOBRIETY POWWOW: A sobriety powwow will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 19, behind the Dighton Town Hall, Somerset Avenue, Route 138. The grand entry will be at 12:30 a.m.

The group Red Road, Native Americans in recovery from either alcohol or drugs, is sponsoring the event, which will feature Native American crafts and jewelry, singing, dancing, drum and flute music.

ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY: The Carpenter Museum, Bay State Road, has on display an exhibit of World War II memorabilia reflecting the experiences of Rehoboth residents. The stories, photographs, and objects reflect their courage, spirit, and sacrifice. An opening reception will take place for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 6. The exhibit will run through September. The museum is open from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays, excluding July 4.

The Carpenter Museum will host a lecture on the home-front effort during World War II at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 17. The talk researched and written by staff at the Old Colony Historical Society, will look into the lives of area residents and businesses who pulled together to support the troops overseas. Scrap drives, air-raid drills, victory gardens, and rationing were all a part of daily life for the community. The lecture, illustrated with slides and artifacts, will be given by Jane Emach-Cambra, who grew up in Dighton and is curator of the Old Colony Historical Society, Taunton. The event is free and open to the public.

CONTRA DANCE: There will be a New England contra dance at 8 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Goff Memorial Hall, Bay State Road.

All dances will be taught by caller Rich Mohr to the music of Kerry Elkin and Friends. Beginners and singles are welcome. Admission is $6.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: The Friends of the Dighton Public Library will hold its 11th annual strawberry festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12, on the Town Hall grounds, Route 138.

The event will feature homemade shortcakes, a light luncheon, a used book sale, children's games and entertainment and piano soloist Joshua Martin.

NASHVILLE SHOW: Tommy Cash, Tricia Elliot and Billy D. Hunter will perform at a four-hour Nashville show at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at Francis Farm, County Street.

Tommy Cash, will perform many of his hits including "Listen," "Rise and Shine" and "Six White Horses." He will also perform a tribute to his late brother, country music legend Johnny Cash.

Tricia Elliott, named county music's female traditional artist of the year, will perform several of her well-known songs including "I Cried Again," "You're the Reason" and "Ain't You Gonna Cry."

Billy D. Hunter will perform "After the Storm" and "I Have All I Need."

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 12.

REPUBLICAN TOWN COMMITTEE: The Rehoboth Republican Town Committee will meet Thursday, June 10, at Lawrence and Beverly Procopio's house, 36 Bay State Rd., for a steak fry. The cost is $15. This is the last meeting of the season. To make reservations, call Beverly at (508) 252-3324.

NEW HOURS: The Dighton Public Library, Main Street, will be closed on Saturdays during the summer.

The library will resume its Saturday hours on Sept. 11.

RETIREMENT PARTY: The Retirement Committee of the D.L. Beckwith Middle School will hold a retirement party in honor of Jack Egan, Bob Lania, Bill Sankey, Lee Silva and Gene Sullivan at 6:15 p.m. Friday, June 11, at the Venus de Milo Restaurant, GAR Highway, Swansea.

Tickets are $40 per person and include dinner, entertainment and gift.

GARDEN TOUR: The Rehoboth Garden Club will host its house and garden tour, Winding Through Thyme, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 12.

The tour will feature 10 gardens and the first-floor interiors of five local homes. The event will commemorate the club's 70th anniversary.

The tour will begin at Tranquil Lake Nursery, 45 River St., where a box lunch will be available to those making reservations by Wednesday, June 9.

Tour tickets are $20 and are available at the Tranquil Lake Nursery, The Secret Garden, Cricket Hill Gift Shop, Past and Present, Country Reflections, Country Thyme Flower and Gift Shop and the Blanding Public Library, all in Rehoboth; at Araujo Farms, Dighton, and at the Seekonk Public Library. NURSERY EVENTS: Tranquil Lake Nursery, 45 River St., will hold the following free gardening workshops in May and June:

Combining Containers with the Mixed Borders, Saturday.

Holly Shimizu, the director of the United States Botanic Garden, will present a workshop, Herbs, Roses, Siberian Iris, Japanese Iris and their June Blooming Companions, on Saturday, June 26.

Tranquil Lake Nursery will hold its 13th annual open house and Summer Garden Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 24. This year's theme, Entertaining from the Garden, will feature chefs and workshops on flower arranging, herbs, container gardening, lectures and demonstrations.

ADOPTION OPTIONS: Adoption Options will hold informational meetings for those exploring the possibility of adoptions this fall. Licensed adoption workers will be available to provide information and answer questions. For the next scheduled Rehoboth meeting, call (800) 337-6513. SENIOR CITIZENS

Dighton Council on Aging, 300 Lincoln Ave., can be reached at (508) 823-0095. The group is planning the following events:

Blood pressure and blood sugar screenings will take place Tuesday, June 15. To make an appointment, call the council. The next blood sugar screening will be held in September.

A wellness clinic is held on the same day as the blood pressure screening. The topic this month will be heat stress.

Massage therapy and stress relief will be offered at all wellness clinics. Certified reflexologist Karen Tripp will be on hand to demonstrate chair massages, a Japanese accupressure massage of the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands from 9 to 10 a.m.

Volunteers are needed to knit lap robes for nursing home patients and caps and mittens for children. Donations of yarn may also be dropped off at the Council on Aging office in Lincoln Village.

Exercise classes will be held at 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes are open to men and women. The cost is $2.

Tai chi classes are held at 9 a.m. Fridays in the Lincoln Village Community Center. The cost is $3 per class.

Cribbage, chess and pokeno are played at 1 p.m. Wednesdays and whistis played on the first and third Mondays of every month.

Line dancing instruction will again be offered at 10 a.m. Thursdays at the Lincoln Village Community Center. The cost is $2. The last class will be held today . Classes will resume again on Sept. 9.

State Sen. Mark Pacheco or a representative from his office will meet with constituents from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at Lincoln Village. Seniors with questions or concerns are urged to visit.

An informative workshop called aromatherapy for wellness will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, in the Lincoln Village Community Center. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and bring towels. To register, call the Council on Aging.

An informational meeting on the Red Hat Society will be held at 1 p.m. today, in the Lincoln Village Community Center.

Certified hearing specialist Patricia Wilbur will conduct free hearing screenings at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the Lincoln Village.

Music on Mondays is held at 1:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month. The council invites seniors to join the group in song and music. The program is free.

Blood pressure checks and glucose screenings are offered each month at no charge. Cholesterol screening is offered quarterly for a $5 fee.

The council offers weekly tai chi classesat 9 a.m. on Tuesdays. The cost is $3. To sign up, call the council.

Hearing screenings are offered on the second Tuesday of the month. To make an appointment, call the council. The next screening is June 8.

Line dancing takes place at 10:15 a.m., Tuesdays.

Games, including checkers, Scrabble, chess, dominoes, backgammon, and poker, will be played at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays throughout this month and next.

Monthly health clinics are offered at 8:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

Gert's Cafe is open for lunch on Mondays.
