CHAT: Wednesday, Oct. 12, noon to 1 p.m.

Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline will talk about the "The Changing Face of Providence" and answer readers' questions.

Mayor David N. Cicilline took office in January 2003, after winning a four-way primary, then taking more than 83 percent of the vote in the general election in November 2002.
Cicilline, who was born in Providence, leads a diverse city where a majority of the city's 178,000 residents are members of minority groups, a city that saw its Hispanic population double between 1990 and 2000.
He himself is a symbol of diversity, as an openly gay Jewish man and whose Roman Catholic father is one of New England's best-known organized crime lawyers.
In taking over as mayor, Cicilline set five priorities: government integrity, strong neighborhoods, great schools, safe streets, and a dynamic economy.
A former defense attorney with a practice on Federal Hill, Cicilline served eight years as a state representative from District 4, on the city's East Side.
Cicilline graduated magna cum laude in 1983 with a degree in political science from Brown University. He later earned a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center.
